Preparing for the First In-Home Care Visit

Simple ways to make an introductory home-care visit feel comfortable, organized, and centered on the person receiving support.

Make room for an honest conversation

An introductory visit works best when the person receiving support can share their own preferences. Families can help with context while leaving space for that person’s voice.

Write down the basics

Consider the routines that matter most, the days and times when help may be useful, household preferences, mobility considerations, pets, entry instructions, and the best family contact.

Detailed medical records should not be sent through a public website form. Discuss sensitive information through an appropriate private process established by the provider.

Ask what happens next

Clarify how availability is confirmed, who will communicate schedule changes, how caregiver fit is considered, and what the provider needs before services can begin.

Give adjustment time

A new person in the home can feel unfamiliar. Clear expectations, respectful introductions, and opportunities for feedback can make the transition more comfortable.
